What’s it for?
“I want to be on the same life page before we take this any further”
“That sounds fair, do you have something specific in mind?”
“Do you want kids?”
“Yes”
“When?”
“I guess my plan was to get around to that after I find a career and explore the world”
“What, like travel?”
“More like learn as much as I can about arts and culture”
“…”
“I don’t think I could accept if I settled down and there were opportunities to experience different sides of life I had missed”
“No one person can know everything”
“But they can try”
“You said career as well, research doesn’t always lend itself well to settling”
“No, but if I find myself as a professor somewhere that would make me a lot more comfortable”
“Since when do you rely on comfort for knowing when something is right?”
“Not to evade your question, but I feel like you’re interrogating me about this”
“I’m sorry, maybe I am. But I wanted to make a point. I think you’re going about this wrong”
“Going about what?”
“Life”
“Ouch, harsh”
“You have such a top-down view, you have all these extravagant goals you can’t possibly do them all. And it’s not that you can’t, no one can”
“In my eyes, it’s the hope that matters most. Shoot for the stars, and if you miss you’ll still get the moon right?”
“Why not stay grounded and watch which flowers bloom around you? When will you be happy?”
“When I’m with you. Why can’t both trains of thought coexist?”
“I don’t like the idea of opposing you”
“Contrasting but complementary”
“You’re too good at sweet-talking”
“And you’re too good at searching answers to unasked questions”
“I don’t want to be waiting for you to be done chasing your dreams to come back to reality”
“In every one of my dreams you’re right there with me, and I’m right there with you”
An argument ensues.
